A glorious day for the City Schools Football Tournament

Football Tournament

On a glorious afternoon at Wyeside, Hampton Dene were the winners of The City School Football Tournament 2023 after a narrow 1-0 win against neighbouring school, St Paul’s. St Paul’s had large spells with the ball but could not often break past the resolute back line of Hampton Dene. When they did, they were thwarted by some excellent saves by the Hampton Dene keeper. The game went into extra time where a goal on the break was enough to settle the game.

In the Plate, Leominster faced Holmer after both sides had progressed from their semi finals via penalty shoot-out wins. In another closely fought game, it was the city side that won, with a solitary goal deciding the game.

Host side and reigning holders HCJS had a good start to the day, winning all of their group games to progress to the Cup, but they were defeated in the Q Final 1-0 by eventual winners, Hampton Dene. HCJS ‘B’ had a fabulous day, finishing runners-up in Group D to St Paul’s. In their cup quarter final, they needed sudden death penalties to overcome Ashperton, before succumbing to Hampton Dene in the semi final.
