Scholarships

Our scholarship programmes recognise and reward exceptional talent which can be nurtured through an education at HCS.

Each year, we offer awards to pupils with the potential to excel in their chosen field. We look to our scholars to bring an attitude, dedication and commitment that will enrich our school community, becoming role models for their peers whilst making the most of their talents. Our scholars receive the support and opportunities to make the very most of their talents.

My Dean's Academic scholarship has motivated me to be ambitious and dedicated to my work as well as encouraging me to extend my academic experiences beyond the classroom with super-curricular activities, such as public speaking and the Biomedical Society.

As a result of my scholarship, I feel confident about applying to Cambridge University to study Veterinary Medicine.

Holly C, Dean's Academic, Music & Art Scholar

Being awarded a Drama scholarship definitely boosted my confidence. It has given me the courage to audition for external plays and musicals, as well as offering plenty of amazing opportunities at school such as co-directing the younger years in their productions.

The Drama department supported me with my application to the National Youth Theatre and, with their support, I was able to get in first time. They are continuing to support me with my applications to drama school as I look to my next steps after HCS.

Leon N, Drama Scholar

My Art Scholarship has influenced my creative journey in so many ways and gave me the confidence to do both Fine Art and Textile Design for my A-Levels. Through my scholarship I have had the opportunity to help younger pupils in Art Club, inspiring them to carry on their art in later years.

My scholarship has shaped my confidence and I'm now going on to study Fashion and Textile Design at Bristol University.

Alice R, Art Scholar

Having my Sports Scholarship has allowed me to balance my studies with extra training sessions and has given me a taste of what being a professional sportsperson would be like. The Sports Department has been great, offering guidance, lunchtime training sessions, and tailored morning ADP sessions. They even helped me stay involved during injuries, and supported me with having external coaches, physios and medical staff in to help.

Throughout my journey to being selected for England U18s and signing with Gloucester, the School has been flexible with my schoolwork, helping me to stay on track.

George K, Sports Scholar

As a Music scholar, I have been invited to play in lots of scholars’ concerts, as well as performing in the cathedral the Hummel trumpet concerto with the school orchestra. These have been inspiring experiences and have boosted my confidence as well as my demeanour as a performer.

As I aspire to read music at Oxford, my teachers have been supporting me a great deal in my work — be that composition, harmony, essay choices, or applying for choral scholarships — and have gone out of their way to help me with research, and giving harmony lessons, a topic outside of the A-Level syllabus.

Jack S, Music Scholar

For 11+, 13+ and 16+ entry

Pupils are invited to apply for scholarships at 11+, 13+ or 16+. Scholarships are merit-based and awarded following an assessment (examination, audition or other appropriate method) and interview process, in addition to our usual entrance examinations. The assessment process takes place during the previous academic year (so for Year 9 entry, pupils would undergo assessment in Year 8).

HCS is a charity, and all fee income is used to balance expenditure. Scholarship opportunities are therefore limited to a small number of pupils each year and are highly sought after. Applying for a scholarship is a competitive process and the Admissions team are on hand to help you determine whether to make an application. Please note that the criteria we provide is for guidance only and does not determine success.

Our scholarships programme runs alongside the means-tested bursary programme which offers support to parents who would otherwise be unable to send their child to HCS. Pupils who are awarded a scholarship may also be able to receive financial assistance to help pay the school fees. Please note that all applications for financial assistance and scholarships should be made at the same time and in advance of the deadline.
