Admissions FAQs

We have compiled a list of the questions we are most often asked by parents which we hope you’ll find helpful. Please don‘t hesitate to contact our Admissions team for more information on 01432 363 506 or email admissions@herefordcs.com.

“We’re here to guide you through every step of the admissions journey. From application to enrolment, we aim to make the transition to HCS as seamless as possible.”

Mrs Libby Eaves Director of Admissions

When can I visit the school?

While we hope that our website gives you a flavour of life at our school, we encourage families, whether registered with us or not, to visit. We run a regular programme of Visitor Mornings throughout the year, as well as larger Open Mornings in the Summer and Autumn Terms. We recommend that you visit us at least three full terms before the September in which you expect your child to join us (so the latest would be the Autumn Term of the year preceding starting with us).

When should I register my child?

We welcome registration as early as possible in order to ensure that you are kept up to date on admissions events and the relevant steps of our application process.

Do you offer taster days?

We offer taster days for all ages in Junior and Senior School following registration. We strongly encourage children to spend the day with us where they will be buddied with a member of their year group and will experience life as part of our community.

For our large cohort of Year 7 applicants, we hold a School Experience Day in the November of Year 6 rather than individual taster days.

Are you selective?

We are looking for pupils who will add to our kind, hard-working and talented community of students. We conduct academic assessment from Year 4 entry onwards but look for potential as much as current attainment.

An interview and school reference are important parts of our selection process and we are particularly keen to offer places to children who will make the most of every opportunity and will contribute to the lived experience of our school values of kindness, courage and integrity.

Do you offer scholarships?

We offer scholarships for children joining our Senior School. Those offered are sport, art, drama, music and academic scholarships to recognise and reward exceptional talent which can be nurtured through an education at Hereford Cathedral School. Please click here for details of the scholarships available at 11+, 13 and 16+ and contact us for further guidance before applying.

Am I able to apply for fees assistance?

We offer a limited number of fee assisted places to children joining our Senior School. A small number of these are transformational bursaries which provide full financial support to families who would not otherwise be able to support their child’s education at the School. We also offer partial fee assistance on a sliding scale according to the results of our means test. Please click here for more details.

Do you offer transport?

We offer a variety of school minibus and coach services which are used by many of our children. These affordable services provide a reliable, supervised journey to and from school and in addition, help to reduce the number of vehicles on the road each morning. We have several established routes available and the service is very popular so please let us know as soon as possible should this be of interest. Concessionary rail fares are also available. For further details, click here.
