If you happen to encounter the Mayor of Hereford in the next 12 months, you may very well see Hereford Cathedral School pupil Anna D by their side, as she has this week been installed as the city’s Junior Mayor.

At a ceremony in the Council Chamber at Hereford Town Hall on Tuesday evening, Anna was sworn in by the Town Clerk in the presence of the Mayor Sharon Michael and councillors.

In her acceptance speech, Year 7 pupil Anna said: “This gives me a real sense of duty, to do my bit, to use my gifts, to share my experiences with my peers, to make Hereford a better place.”

Junior Mayor Anna will be supporting the Mayor of Hereford Sharon Michael, and her successor who will be appointed in May, at certain events during the coming year. Her duties will include an appearance at a local pantomime later this month, opening the May Fair, and switching on the Christmas lights in November. She will also become involved with Hereford City Youth Council. Anna cites her desire to “make a change for youth in Hereford” as her motivation for applying for the role.

When asked about her new role, Anna said: “I think it’s a wonderful opportunity. It’s definitely a really nice experience to learn more about the city.”

She added: “The ceremony was fun. It was quite hard to get the gown and hat on and off, and it was definitely very warm!”

Headmaster Mr Smith commented:  “The School is delighted that Anna has been appointed Junior Mayor, and I am sure she will conduct her civic duties with aplomb.”
