HCS performers' masterclass with Queen of the West End, Kerry Ellis

Hereford Cathedral School performers enjoyed a masterclass with Queen of the West End, Kerry Ellis, in the Powell Theatre yesterday.

Kerry has more than 20 years' performance experience in the West End and Broadway. She has starred in Les Misérables, Wicked, We Will Rock You, Cats, My Fair Lady and many more. She has also collaborated with Queen and Brian May.

Thirty HCS pupils from years 9-13 enjoyed an hour's workshop with Kerry, followed by a musical theatre coaching session and a Q&A. Kerry was also able to offer guidance to our pupils ahead of next week's One Night Only performance at The Courtyard. Below is a video of Kerry supporting the students through their performance of One Day More from Les Misérables, which they will be performing in next week's show.

This was a hugely valuable and memorable experience for our aspiring performers. Year 12 student, Belle B said: "Being able to hear Kerry’s feedback and getting to sing for her was an absolute highlight, but I really enjoyed the improv exercises the most as they encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone."

Year 10 pupil and Cantabile Girls' Choir member, Perdy J, said: "It was a fantastic experience to work with someone of [Kerry's] knowledge. She helped me so much with my performing." Year 12 student, Leon N, added: "It was exciting and inspiring."

HCS Director of Drama, Mr Martin, commented: "It was an extraordinary privilege and a real pleasure to welcome Kerry to the school, and I know the pupils - and staff! - gained so much from her direction, her coaching and her support. She was wonderfully positive and really detailed with her feedback, and it is so important for our students to be able to see the commitment and perseverance it takes to forge a successful career in the arts. What shone through was the hard work, resilience and self-belief Kerry has shown in building such a successful career, and I know our students left buzzing with excitement and inspiration. We couldn't have asked for a better afternoon."

Last night, Kerry posted on Instagram: "I was blown away by the talent, courage and dedication the students brought today! Thank you for having me. Hope you all had fun."

Kerry will be on tour later this year, and her Queen of the West End show will be coming to The Courtyard in November.
