“Everyone speaks English so why learn another language?”
This isn’t strictly true. According to the CIA World Fact Book, only 5.6% of the world’s population speaks English as their first language. To remain monolingual is to restrict your educational development, your communication and thinking abilities, and to deny yourself the ability to fully appreciate and understand the world in which you live.
Learning another language opens up new opportunities and gives you perspectives that you might never have encountered otherwise. Personal, professional, social, and economic considerations all point to the advantages of learning foreign languages.
Still not convinced?
In 2014 an All-Party Parliamentary Group on Modern Languages estimated the UK alone loses £50bn a year in lost contracts due to an absence of employee language skills. (BBC report.)
The Modern Languages Team is dedicated to opening the doors for pupils to enjoy, learn and appreciate language learning and its essential life skills. We recognise the highly competitive world awaiting our pupils and that the need for them to be able to speak two languages or more has never been greater.
From motivating lessons and MFL specific careers events, to cultural trips and exchange programmes, we strive to foster a love for the new and a thirst for cultural awareness. “Language learning begins with a few words and phrases and that small investment can grow into a lifetime of interest, employment and opportunity.” John Worne, Director of Strategy at the British Council.
The Modern Languages department currently offers the following languages as curriculum subjects at the School:
