Members of the cast of Hereford Cathedral School’s upcoming Year 8 and 9 play, The Light Burns Blue, were privileged to have the opportunity to work with a member of the original cast of the play during the Easter holidays.
In a lively and engaging workshop led by directors Jenny Davies and Lex Kaby, participants were invited to dive into the world of The Light Burns Blue – a play that reimagines the story of Elsie Wright and the Cottingley Fairies with a sharp focus on truth, storytelling, and the power of belief. The session brought together a mix of theatre-makers, performers, and curious creatives, all eager to explore the text and its wider themes.
Jenny, who played Winifred in the original production of The Light Burns Blue, brought a unique and personal perspective to the room. Now about to tour with the National Theatre’s production of Nye as staff director, she offered valuable insight into both performing and directing the piece. Alongside Lex, she created a relaxed, collaborative space where everyone felt encouraged to contribute ideas and take creative risks.
The workshop began with warm-ups and devising exercises designed to spark imagination and ensemble connection. From there, participants were guided through character exploration and ensemble theatre work, with particular attention paid to the blend of historical fact and fiction that makes the play so distinctive.
Both Jenny and Lex shared reflections on staging the piece, including its fluid structure and its shifts between realism and theatricality. There was also rich discussion around the young female voices at the heart of the story, and how to honour them in performance.
The workshop wrapped up with a real sense of creative energy, curiosity, and connection; an inspiring day all round.
