HCS Debaters head for national Mace final after regional win

Debaters

Congratulations to the Hereford Cathedral School Debating Team of Ed M, Ioan O and Quinn P, who have succeeded in winning a place at the National Finals Day of the Mace competition by winning the recent regional final against RGS Worcester.

This is a huge achievement in what the English Speaking-Union describes as being "the oldest and largest debating competition for schools in England".

In the regional finals, the HCS trio successfully opposed the motion: 'This House would nationalise the energy supply system' with a spirited performance by an extremely well-prepared team being justly rewarded. What is even more encouraging is that two of the current team are Year 12 students, meaning that they will be able to enter the competition again next year!

The team are looking forward to travelling to Dartmouth House, ESU international headquarters in London, to oppose the motion: 'This House would build homes on the green belt' on Monday 28 March. A great day of debating lies ahead of them!

HCS has twice won the Mace - in 1981 and 1972.
