Hereford Cathedral School has been buzzing with excitement this week as students join together to celebrate Chinese New Year with a series of engaging activities.

Organised by Mrs Nelson and Mrs Chang, the school library hosted a lively lunchtime event on Tuesday, where students took part in a variety of cultural challenges. Among the highlights was the chopsticks challenge, which tested participants’ dexterity, as well as Chinese calligraphy, where students learned to write in the ancient art form. The Jianzi Challenge — a tough ‘keepy-uppy’ test using a weighted shuttlecock — proved to be a real crowd-pleaser, challenging students to showcase their balance and co-ordination. Well done to Year 8 pupil, Ali ER, who achieved the top score of 12!

The celebrations continued in the evening, when the school’s boarders gathered at Wilmot House to cook a celebratory dinner together. Working as a team, they successfully made delicious traditional Chinese dumplings.

Our visiting pupils from China have also been sharing their family traditions for Chinese New Year during form time, bringing the celebrations to life for their form mates.

HCS pupils are embracing the Chinese New Year with enthusiasm, learning about cultural traditions while having a great time together. The festivities are a perfect way to start the Year of the Dragon in style!
