A Hereford Cathedral School student has been recognised on the national stage for her dedication to school libraries.

Georgia E, a Year 13 student, was a finalist in the prestigious Pupil Library Assistant of the Year Award, which celebrates outstanding contributions from student librarians across the UK. The final awards ceremony took place in London yesterday, compered by comedian Russell Kane. The event highlighted the vital role young volunteers play in supporting school libraries.

At the event, Georgia had the chance to meet and chat with a host of eminent authors, including Victoria Hislop, Ally Sherrick, Josh Lacey and Teri Terry.

Since Year 10, Georgia has devoted a great deal of her time to helping run the libraries in both the Senior School and the Junior School. Her enthusiasm for reading and literacy has made a lasting impact on her fellow pupils.

One of her stand-out initiatives was developing a series of AI-powered ‘fortune-tellers’ to help Hereford Cathedral Junior School pupils discover books suited to their interests and passions. This creative approach encouraged younger pupils to engage with reading in an exciting and interactive way.

Georgia commented: “I’ve been a pupil librarian for four years now, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It’s been really rewarding helping other pupils in the library, whether that’s been with homework, recommending a book, or just having a chat with students in other years. Not only has my work in the library hopefully helped others, but it has enabled me to become more confident, knowledgeable and resourceful through having to organise events, talk to a crowd, and even train younger pupil librarians. Getting to go to the Pupil Library Assistant Awards this year has been such a great way to finish my pupil librarian journey at HCS.”

Huge congratulations to Georgia on her achievement. Her commitment to fostering a love of reading within the school community is greatly appreciated by HCS.
