Fourteen teams took part in the City Schools Football Tournament at Wyeside this week. Split into two groups of seven, there was plenty of football for all, with a good standard on display. After the group stages were complete, the competition went into the Cup and Plate knock-out.
In the Cup for the best four sides from the two groups, St Francis Xavier defeated Lugwardine on penalties in their semi-final while St Paul’s beat Stretton Sugwas. The final was closely contested, but it went the way of St Paul’s who won 1-0.
In the Plate, for sides who had finished third and fourth in their group, hosts HCJS beat Marlbrook on penalties, while Lord Scudamore defeated Mordiford in the semi-finals. In the final, Lord Scudamore raced into a two-goal lead and although HCJS reduced the deficit, they were unable to grab an equaliser, leaving Scudamore to claim the Plate victory.
