Last week, six members of Hereford Cathedral School’s Environmental Society from Year 8 and Year 10 represented the School at the first Herefordshire Schools Climate Conference. Assuming the roles of Uganda and Azerbaijan while taking part in a mock COP conference, our pupils’ contributions were fantastic. The two teams set out their positions clearly, drawing on the detailed research which they had completed, and showing great attention to detail when challenging other countries on their positions, which was always done respectfully.

Collaboration and negotiating skills were put to good use, and much was learnt about the challenges and opportunities of working at the global scale to combat the problem of climate change.

In the afternoon, we heard from members of Herefordshire Council who set out some of the measures being taken by local government to reduce the county’s contribution to climate change. Great questions were asked by pupils, and it was exciting to hear about some of the new initiatives which will affect our lives – as well as the global climate – very soon.

We have come back inspired to continue working to improve our school’s environmental sustainability, and with lots of ideas about how to do so.

Well done to Isaac P, Charlie R, Edward T, Martha P, Lola R and Isla S for their hard work.
