Musically talented Hereford Cathedral School pupil Dimity S has just been accepted to study at the Royal College of Music in London.

The 14-year-old pupil, who plays the recorder, flute and piano, accepted the place last week. This means that, from September, Dimity will travel to London every Saturday to take part in a programme of study at the RCM from 9am until 4pm, involving tuition as well as academic, orchestral and chamber music studies. Dimity was also offered a place at London’s Royal Academy of Music, which she turned down.

“I feel amazing; I’m really happy about getting in,” explained Dimity, who is now working towards Grade 8 on the recorder and flute.

But with such a packed schedule of musical commitments, it is a wonder how Dimity will fit everything in. Inside school, she performs with Hereford Cathedral School’s Concert Band, Symphony Orchestra and Gilbert Consort, as well as singing with Cantabile Girls’ Choir, Chamber Choir and Chapel Choir. Outside school, she performs with Hereford Youth Concert Band, Herefordshire Youth Music and Holy Trinity Choir.

Dimity’s acceptance of her place at the esteemed conservatoire does pose a few logistical issues. Not wanting to miss her Friday-night choir practice, she plans to travel by train on Saturday mornings, leaving Hereford before 6am.

“It’s quite a big commitment,” Dimity added.

HCS Director of Music Mr David Evans commented: “We’re delighted that Dimity has been accepted at the Royal College of Music, it’s a true reflection of her hard work and capability.”

There appears to be no end to the Year 9 pupil’s talents: aside from her musical interests she also somehow manages to fit in rowing and horseriding, and last year achieved the top grade 9 in GCSE French, aged just 13.
