Hereford Cathedral School choir Colla Voce had a truly memorable time when they were invited to sing in a performance of Mahler’s Symphony No8 at Bridgewater Hall in Manchester last week. The concert was organised to celebrate Chetham’s School of Music‘s 50th year, and was recorded for BBC Radio 3.
Mahler’s 8th (sometimes referred to as the ‘Symphony of a Thousand’ due to the massive forces required to perform it) is one of the greatest pieces in the repertoire and includes a small but significant part for a ‘Knabenchor’. This is the part that Colla Voce were asked to sing.
Hereford Cathedral School Director of Music Mr David Evans said: “What a privilege for Colla Voce, the Cathedral School’s junior chamber choir, to be involved in a joint performance of Mahler’s Symphony No 8. Many of the country’s leading young musicians presented this immense work at the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester never previously performed by a school. Hear the mind-blowing live performance on BBC Radio 3 on Wednesday 10 July at 7.30pm. Truly awesome!”
Chethams Tweeted after the event: “We so enjoyed having @HerefordCS with us for Mahler 8. Your students are an absolute credit to you and they did so well.”
