Report by HCS Director of Sport, Mrs Sarah Hopkins
It has been good to get back to normality and see a full term of trips and fixtures and this continued on into Sports Day. The sun was shining and spirits were high as old traditions were reinstated. As this will be the last year with the current Heads of House due to our restructuring and the introduction of Heads of Year, the house parade was particularly poignant.
The pop-up tents purchased by the PTA looked great again this year and gave a real HCS community feel to the event and contributed to the positive atmosphere felt by both pupils and parents throughout the day.
Once again, competition was fierce and there were many excellent performances and four new school records were achieved. Esme B broke both the 100m and 200m Junior Girls records, both of which were held by Sarah Fletcher since 1998. This was very well deserved as Esme has been running well at competitions this year and posting great times consistently. Gabriel A broke the Junior Boys javelin record, throwing 28.85m, beating Gareth Lewis’ 26.44m set in 1993, a time when Gabriel’s mum was at the school. Gabriel has worked hard all season and set his sights on this record, so this was very well deserved. Fin H has been equally as determined this year, setting his sights on the Junior Boys’ high jump record and his hard work paid off when he jumped 1m 48cm, which was 1cm higher than James Lock who set the record back in 1990.
The annual Victor and Victrix Lodurums were won by:
Year 7 Girls – Golda M
Year 7 Boys – Christian G
Year 8 Girls – Esme B
Year 8 Boys – Fin H
Inter Girls – Jess C
Inter Boys – Will S
Senior Girls – Natasha P
Senior Boys – Alfie S
However, what was even more impressive was the positive and inclusive team atmosphere displayed amongst the pupils. Watching Sixth Form pupils running alongside juniors to encourage them over the line and pupils cheering and clapping for all was heart warming and what we have come to expect from our amazing pupil body. It really is a whole school event where participation and achieving points for your house are celebrated along-side winning and record breaking performances. Well done to everyone involved.
