The School's dedicated Careers and Higher Education Advisory Team provides a comprehensive, careers information, education and guidance facility. This is available to advise and enhance appropriate decision making by students when selecting their higher education courses, employment and training options or gap year possibilities.
Students are also assigned a UCAS Co-ordinator who provides expert advice on the university application process.
Throughout the Sixth Form, students are provided with the opportunity to meet with the careers and higher education team on an individual group basis. Students are encouraged to make use of the extensive facilities within the higher education library, which includes, university prospectuses, careers information, gap year information, CDs, DVDs and the Internet.
In this period also students will have the opportunity to attend a series of courses on careers and higher education matters. This is supported by a visit to a prestigious university, attendance at a Higher Education Fair and an annual higher education conference for members of the Lower Sixth Form.
It is also recognised that work experience enhances the student's application to university. Hereford Cathedral School organises a work experience scheme in Year 12 to assist careers and higher education choice.
A biennial careers convention also takes place where students and parents can talk to a wide range of exhibitors.
The importance of good advice in a student’s development is crucial and key to this is the close relationship between the parents and the School. This is enhanced by an annual Higher Education evening for Lower Sixth Form parents and students. This evening provides an opportunity for parents and students to understand the university system, keep up to date with the latest developments, and meet staff from universities. Parents are encouraged to maintain dialogue with the careers and higher education team.
In the Upper Sixth Form, students are encourages to attend mock interviews by individuals with experience in the field chosen by the student. Students continue to be supported once they have left school through a post A level guidance service.
The success of the higher education guidance process is highlighted by over 90% of students achieving their first place university choice.
